Correlative Coordination and Variable Subject–Verb Agreement in German

چکیده
Coordinated subjects often show variable number agreement with the finite verb, but linguistic approaches to this phenomenon have rarely been informed by systematically collected data. We report results from three experiments investigating German speakers’ preferences complex joined correlative conjunctions sowohl…als auch (‘both…and’), weder…noch (‘neither…nor’) or entweder…oder (‘either…or’). examine what extent conjunction type and a conjunct’s relative proximity verb affect acceptability processibility of singular vs. plural agreement. Experiment 1 was an untimed rating task, 2 timed sentence completion 3 self-paced reading task. Taken together, our that coordination in is primarily determined default constraint triggering agreement, which interacts linear order semantic factors. Semantic differences between only affected absence processing pressure not their initial computation. The combined offline online experimental measures suggest constraints under investigation do differ weighting also timing during

Reanalyzing German Correlative Es
Several Germanic languages use correlatives to mark subordination. German is considered to be a prime example of a language realizing correlative constructions to embed finite argument clauses. This paper discusses complex clausal constructions in German that can be identified by a so-called correlative nominal element es (‘it’) and a right-peripheral full clausal argument that is linked to es....
متن کاملTense and agreement in German agrammatism.
This study presents results from sentence-completion and grammaticality-judgment tasks with 7 German-speaking agrammatic aphasics and 7 age-matched control subjects examining tense and subject-verb agreement marking. For both experimental tasks, we found that the aphasics achieved high correctness scores for agreement, while tense marking was severely impaired. To account for the observed tense...
متن کاملCoordination Without Prior Agreement
Assuming that there is an a priori agreement between processes on the names of shared memory locations, as done in almost all the publications on shared memory algorithms, is tantamount to assuming that agreement has already been solved at the lower-level. From a theoretical point of view, it is intriguing to gure out how coordination can be achieved without relying on such lower-level agreeme...

Feature Matrices and Agreement: A Case Study for German Case
This paper illustrates the use of ‘feature matrices’, a technique for handling ambiguity and feature indeterminacy in feature structure grammars using unification as the single mechanism for processing. Both phenomena involve forms that can be mapped onto multiple, often conflicting values. This paper illustrates their respective challenges through German case agreement, which has become the li...
